  1. Laurence

    Hello,

Many thanks for your comprehensive guide re: the Forbidden City! So interesting and useful 🙂

I have few questions on the other famous sites to visit in Beijing. I understand that almost all sites need to be reserved few days before on official websites (if you don’t want to book via tourist operators), among others, Tiananmen Square, although it’s free. For this latter, I found reservation could be made on official website https://yuyue.tamgw.beijing.gov.cn/login.html or https://www.tiananmenchenglou.com/, however, both seem to be available only in Chinese, am I right? Would you kindly advise if there is any English version?
Same for the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, is reservation a must or can we purchase our ticket on the day at the venue?
For your information, I won’t download WeChat!

Your advises would be much appreciated!
    Thanks a lot

    Laurence

    • Ricky

      Hi Laurence,

Thank you for your kind words! I’m really glad you found the Forbidden City guide helpful.

You’re correct—many famous sites in Beijing now require advance reservations on official platforms, and Tiananmen Square is one of them (even though it’s free). Unfortunately, the two official websites you mentioned are only available in Chinese—there is no official English version at the moment.

For Mao Zedong Mausoleum, reservations are generally required as well, and like Tiananmen Square, the booking site is in Chinese. Tickets are free, and in the past you could sometimes queue early in the morning without a booking, but this is no longer reliable, especially during busy periods.

Since you don’t plan to use WeChat (which is the easiest way for most people to book), the options would be:

Booking through a Chinese-speaking friend or local contact who can reserve for you.

Using a tour operator who can handle the reservations on your behalf.
