    Hi Ricky!
Thank you so much for the insightful explanation, it was really helpful!
I noticed on Trip.com that there are trains from Datong to Yanmenguan that take about 50 minutes. Would those trains get me reasonably close to the entrance (within taxi distance)?
Also, how crowded should I expect the pass to be in August if I plan to arrive around 8:30 a.m.?
Thanks again in advance for your help!

    • Ricky

Hi Viola, I am glad that you enjoyed the blog post. Yep — those ~50-minute trains you’re seeing on Trip.com are for the new high-speed stop “Yanmenguan / 雁门关站”, and they do get you reasonably close — but not to the gate itself.

      1) Train → entrance: is it within taxi distance?

Yes. From Yanmenguan HSR Station, you’ll still need a short road transfer to the scenic area.

There is a station-to-scenic-area connection bus/shuttle that was launched when the station opened, linking Yanmenguan HSR Station ↔ Yanmen Pass Scenic Area (South Gate).

If the shuttle timing doesn’t match your train, a taxi is the backup (easy/normal to do from the station).

Also note: even after you arrive at the scenic area, the core pass/fortress is about 2 km from the start/visitor area, and most people take the sightseeing bus (small fee) rather than walk that stretch.

      2) How crowded in August if you arrive ~8:30 a.m.?

August = peak travel season (summer holidays), but Yanmen Pass is usually not “Mutianyu-level” crowded. Expect:

8:30 a.m.: generally comfortable — you’ll beat most tour buses.

      10:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m.: busiest window (groups + midday arrivals).

      Weekends: noticeably busier than weekdays.

If you can, aim for right at opening (around 8:00–8:15) so you’re already up on the walls/through the key gates before the first wave arrives.
