Before High-Speed Trains, There Were Tea Caravans

Long before luggage had wheels, traders crossed these mountains with tea, horses and supplies. 🐎🍵

Lijiang became an important stop along the Ancient Tea Horse Road, connecting communities across Yunnan and Tibet.

Walking through the old town today, it’s easy to imagine caravans entering the same streets after long journeys through mountain passes.

Lijiang’s beauty didn’t grow in isolation. It came from movement, trade and generations of cultures meeting one another.

A Language That Looks Like Art

In Lijiang, writing can look like a collection of tiny paintings. 📜

Dongba script, traditionally used by the Naxi people, uses pictographic symbols inspired by people, animals, nature and everyday life.

Look for it on signs, handmade paper and cultural displays throughout the old town.

For a more meaningful souvenir, visit a Dongba cultural studio and learn the story behind a symbol before taking it home.

It’s more memorable than another fridge magnet—and much harder to explain at airport security. 😉

From street level, Lijiang feels like a maze.

From Lion Hill, it suddenly makes sense. ⛰️

Grey rooftops ripple across the old town. Narrow lanes disappear between wooden courtyards. In the distance, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain rises above everything.

Climb to Wangu Pavilion in the late afternoon and watch the colours change across the rooftops.

It’s one of those views that makes you stop taking photos for a moment—because the real thing is better.
