Uncover Mogao Caves’ History and Best Travel Routes

Step into a world where art, history, and faith have lived together for more than 1,600 years—the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang are truly one of China’s greatest treasures.

The Mogao Caves are set into the cliffs of Mingsha Mountain, about 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City in Gansu Province.

  • A Cave City of Wonders – First carved in AD 366, the Mogao Caves stretch across the cliffs of Mingsha Mountain. Over centuries, nearly 500 caves were filled with vibrant murals and colorful statues, creating the largest and best-preserved collection of Buddhist cave art in the world.

  • Walls That Tell Stories – Walk inside and every surface comes alive: Buddhas in serene poses, tales from ancient sutras, Chinese myths, and portraits of donors. Together, these paintings offer a vivid picture of life in old China—its clothes, music, dance, and beliefs.

  • The “Museum on the Wall” – Often called the World’s Longest Art Gallery, Mogao is more than a tourist stop. It’s a living history book, carved and painted into stone, waiting for you to explore.

Who Made Mogao Caves, Why

Why were the Mogao Caves built, and by whom? The story is as magical as the caves themselves.

  • A Monk’s Vision – In 366 AD, a Buddhist monk named Le Zun saw golden light shining on the cliffs of Mingsha Mountain, like a holy sign. Inspired, he carved the very first cave to honor the Buddha.

  • Faith and Devotion – Over the next thousand years, emperors, nobles, merchants, and ordinary families all sponsored new caves. Each cave was their way of showing devotion, praying for blessings, and leaving behind a legacy of faith.

  • A Crossroads of Cultures – Because Dunhuang sat on the Silk Road, travelers from across Asia stopped here. Monks, artists, and traders helped shape the caves into a living gallery where Chinese and foreign ideas blended into something unique and beautiful.

Visiting today, you don’t just see ancient art—you feel the hopes and dreams of the people who built these caves more than 1,600 years ago.

  • Enlightening Mural Paintings – The cave walls glow with scenes of Buddhist legends, Chinese myths, and everyday life from a thousand years ago. The colors may be ancient, but the stories still feel alive and full of energy.

  • A Gallery of Time – From cave to cave, you’ll see how art styles changed over centuries. Each painting and sculpture is like a snapshot of the people, beliefs, and dreams of its time.

I got 1130 tickets to visit the 8 caves included in the ticket. How can I get tickets for the special caves in advance? My visit is late Oct. Is it possible to get in earlier (say 9 am to watch films and queue for special caves tickets before seeing the 8 caves included in the main ticket)?

How Special Cave Tickets Work at Mogao

The 1130 RMB package you have covers the digital center films + shuttle + visit to 8 open caves (assigned by the guide on the day).

The special caves (e.g., Cave 285, Cave 220, Cave 320, etc.) require separate tickets (usually 150–300 RMB each).

These are limited, not included in the standard ticket, and must be purchased in person at the Mogao Digital Exhibition Center on the same day.

      Advance Booking?

Unfortunately, special cave tickets cannot be booked online in advance — they are only sold onsite.

They are released daily in limited numbers, and once sold out, that’s it for the day.

      How to Improve Your Chances

Yes, you can arrive earlier (around 9:00 AM) to watch the films first and then go directly to the counter to buy special cave tickets before joining the main tour.

The earlier you arrive, the better your chances of getting the caves you want, as special cave tickets are highly sought-after, especially in October (high season).

Staff usually help you time it so you can still catch your scheduled group for the 8 included caves after seeing the special ones.

      Tips

Bring your passport (needed for all tickets).

Have cash or a Chinese mobile payment method ready (not all counters accept foreign cards).

If you have a specific cave in mind, let the staff know right away when buying.
